about me

My name is Mia Destiny Irizarry and I am an experienced graduate and self-proclaimed "maker of happy things" with a double degree in both Creative Technologies and Studio Art looking for work opportunities to explore product and brand development through user experience based design, prototyping & 3-D modeling.

artist statement

My work has always revolved around a cutesy, cartoonish and a classic rubber-hose animation style. I cling to animation’s nonsensical exaggeration of emotions and the human figure as well as the overall disregard for any sense of anatomy or physics. Throughout my work, I strive to capture the essence of childhood wonder and delight. Through a combination of multimedia and interactivity, I aim to transport viewers into a world where everyday scenes come to life with vibrant colors, multimedia, and a sense of playful exploration.

At the core of my artistic endeavors is a commitment to introducing fun and playfulness into everyday scenes through multimedia and interactivity. My undergraduate thesis work Play Plates explored the idea of an immersive piece that wasn't yet complete until the viewer interacted with it. I also love to make what I have deemed “Lil’ Guys” which often include inanimate or mundane objects with very animated faces and bright and playful colors. Some examples of this include a few of my recent ceramic sculptures: a thoughtless to-go box with his tongue out, a winking camera and a “dumb” looking rock.

In a world that often emphasizes modernity, minimalism and serious traditional art, my mission is to make work that shows it’s okay to be silly, and that it doesn’t invalidate its message. Through my work, I wish to draw in a broad spectrum of viewers, uniting people from all walks of life in a shared exploration of the fun in the mundane.
